What is a DTC Code?
From model year 1996 on, vehicles manufactured for sale in North America are mandated by the government to be equipped with a diagnostic system called OBD-II, which stands for On-Board Diagnostics II. This diagnostic system monitors the operations of all engine management systems activity to ensure compliance with emission standards.The emissions of the vehicle are monitored constantly and when there is a malfunction in the OBD-II system, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) on the instrument cluster illuminates to let the driver know that a fault has occured. An associated DTC or diagnostic trouble code is also stored in the vehicle's memory. The DTC Code(s) can then be read using a compatible scan tool. This web site lists the DTC Codes and descriptions.
